🌿 History of Vandanmedu Grama Panchayat
🏞️ Historical Background
Situated in the foothills of the Western Ghats, Vandanmedu is a land renowned for its spice and cash crops. The present-day Vandanmedu evolved through a combination of indigenous tribal culture, migration from Tamil Nadu, and the subsequent settlement of farmers from Central Travancore. Migrant farmers who cleared forest areas and converted them into cultivable land laid the foundation for the growth and development of the region.
🏗️ History of Development
Even before the formation of the Grama Panchayat, several government institutions such as a police outpost, forest office, village office, and post office were functioning in the area. The old Government Market was an important trading centre in the High Range region. The Plantation Workers’ Strike of 1971 marked a historic turning point in the protection of workers’ rights.
🏛️ Administrative History
Vandanmedu Grama Panchayat was officially established on 15 August 1953. During the initial period, the Panchayat was administered by a government-nominated committee. Later, democratically elected governing bodies took over and played a significant role in leading the development of the Panchayat.
🌾 Agricultural History
Farmers began settling in the region from 1948 onwards as part of the Grow More Food programme. Cardamom, tea, and paddy cultivation were among the major agricultural activities during the early period. Today, Vandanmedu is recognized as one of the major production centres for spice crops.
🎭 Cultural History
The first educational institution in the Panchayat was an L.P. School established in 1953. Over the years, several other educational institutions, including high schools, were established. Vandanmedu is distinguished by its rich cultural tradition, where people belonging to different religious communities live together in harmony and coexistence.
